Hamira was selected by the Conservative party as the Westminster candidate for her native Glasgow East to fight the General Election in May 2010. Hamira says “It was an honour to have been selected by the party and a very exciting time for me to contribute towards making a positive change and contribution to the area in which I grew up. I received an excellent response from local residents, who liked the fact that I wasn’t a career politician, but someone who genuinely cares and someone who wants to make a positive contribution to our Scottish society”. As a social activist, she has the desire to represent the voice of the community, and so has pledged to work with and listen to the people of Scotland and represent their issues, concerns and needs.

Hamira also set up the Scottish Conservatives Community Cohesion Task Force and holds the position of Chair. She is extremely passionate in developing and influencing policy solutions that enable us to live together in a safe and integrated society; which support communities and families and instil a greater sense of civic responsibility amongst all. In Scotland integration is easier in that we have a smaller country – we are happy to live side by side and communicate with our neighbours – this does not mean we should be complacent.

Her aim is to facilitate strong relationships between different groups, and encourage meaningful interaction, rather than bringing people together simply for the sake of it. She has always had an interest in current affairs and now feels that she is in a position, both professionally and personally, to participate rather than observe.

Hamira believes that people should be in charge of what goes on in their lives – not politicians. She believes taxpayers should get value for money not short changed with populist policies. She believes she is honest, accountable and has fresh ideas. Hamira’s beliefs go hand in hand with Conservative beliefs; the motivation to succeed; to understand the importance of working hard for the good things in life and encouraging the importance of a strong family unit. Hamira’s experience in business has made her appreciate first hand the damaging effect which red tape and high taxes can have on job creation. At a time when the country is in recession, and people are worried about losing their jobs, she believes there is urgent need for change.
